What Is Zakat?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — a compulsory annual payment of a fixed portion of qualifying wealth, given to eligible people in need, purely for the sake of Allah. The word means purification, blessing, and growth.

Zakat is obligatory on every adult Muslim whose wealth reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold and has been in their possession for a full lunar year (Hawl).

Who Can Receive Zakat?

The Quran specifies eight categories (At-Tawbah 9:60):

  1. The poor (Al-Fuqara)
  2. The needy (Al-Masakin)
  3. Zakat collectors
  4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
  5. Those in bondage (freeing enslaved people)
  6. Those in debt
  7. In the cause of Allah
  8. The stranded traveller (Ibn Sabil)
